A cozy, library-like atmosphere might come to mind when you think "wine bar," but what if you like some groove with your grapes? Newly opened Juicy Wine Company offers a downstairs wine shop and deli, but promises a laid-back lounge upstairs. The Vin Crowd went to see if the combo makes for a vine time. Joe Fischel, 24 Selection: By the glass, try Drew "Cargasacchi-Jalama Vineyard 'Potbelly Block'" pinot noir: ripe, deep and delicate. It lived up to its name's verbosity, but at $15 a glass, you'll have to find a sugar daddy to take you out. Atmosphere: The look aims for Spartan-cum-Feng Shui, but comes up flaccid. Service: Friendly and straightforward; staff attractively borders the line between hipster and metrosexual. Crowd: Not particularly noticeable--no knockouts, oddities or scenesters--more of a Midwest mush (but we arrived early)....

Pearl Dahmen can make even the dullest things funny - like inventory control. No, she's not a magician, she's a stand-up comic who also happens to be an accountant. In her comedy act, Dahmen covers topics like feng shui, raising a teenage daughter and being a single mom. As a certified public accountant, she tackles topics such as business plans, bookkeeping and taxes. Blond and bubbly like Katie Couric, Dahmen has a made-for-TV look. She will blend her two passions on-screen in a new show that mixes business with pleasure. Beyond the Bottom Line premieres Monday at 10 p.m. on Comcast Channel 21. Dahmen works full time as an accountant, but she defies the stereotype of a pencil-necked pencil-pusher. In her free time, she appears at clubs like McCurdy's Comedy Theatre in Sarasota....

ALMOST a year after Reynaldo Wycocoone of the best known directors of the National Bureau of Investigationdied of a stroke, his office still remains unoccupied. The bureaus present chief, Nestor Mantaring, has decided to convert the directors office at the third floor of the NBI headquarters in Manila into a museum. Nothing is final yet, Mantaring told the Inquirer. But as of now, there is a big chance that we will be pushing through with the plan of turning the Office of the Director into a museum. Mantaring, who served as assistant director during Wycocos administration, had said in an interview last year that the deaths of four of his predecessors were merely coincidental. Wycoco was the fourth NBI chief after Antonio Aragon, Santiago Toledo and Federico Opinion Jr....

Beyond words in the Lion City

SINGAPORE ? In the lion state of Singapore, there is such a thing as the Crazy Horse, which on first hearing we thought was the old band of rocker Neil Young. Only when we got here did we find out that it was a tasteful showcase of burlesque imported for the tropics. There are many Filipinos in Singapore, working as domestic helpers, waitresses, cartoonists, musicians, but we weren?t here to interview them, rather to experience what latest worldly and cultural delights the city state had to offer, billed as the Beyond Words Media Familiarization Tour, or Uniquely Vibrant. Crazy Horse, imported from what could be France, was just one of the attractions we were exposed to during our five-day, four-night stay at the Hotel New Majestic, the boutique hotel located on Bukit Pasoh Road in Chinatown, just recently converted from its grand old days as a bordello....

Structures are energy emanating forms with a life of their own

Built structures are energy-emanating forms that have a life of their own. The various portions of the buildings form its active parts, each with its genuine sense of display and essence. The front facade of the building exclusively boasts the style and conception of the architect. The front facade could be just plain regular block or it could take diverse proportions. In terms of appearance it is meant to receive the guests with open arms and to give a clear inkling to what has been done inside. The rear facade in most cases is left simple and uncomplicated with not much of paraphernalia deployed. Broadly the front and back are strikingly in contrast to each other. ....

House on bad feng shui plot

Reading about an old contact, Port Klang state assemblyman Datuk Zakaria Md Deros, in trouble following the construction of a palatial mansion without approval from the local council, Sunday Star Vasthu Sastra columnist T. SELVA decided to visit him to have a chat and do an analysis of his house in Kampung Idaman in Port Klang. A SOLEMN mood prevailed when I walked into the muddy ground of Datuk Zakaria Md Deros? unfinished dream house. Wearing a faded short-sleeved shirt and sitting on a wooden bench outside the construction cabin, Zakaria was looking through the stack of yesterday?s newspapers, including Chinese dailies, which carried front-page reports and photographs on the commotion that took place outside his controversial property last Sunday. ?Hello brother,? he greeted me and I was surprise he could still remember me, as our acquaintance goes back over 25 years when he was just a budding politician in my hometown Port Klang....

Dear Dr Dcor: We live in a '60s colonial, and our first-floor bathroom is right off the kitchen. My sister is taking a course in feng shui. She told me I must relocate our bathroom for the sake of our health and happiness. What is feng shui and do you believe in it? Linda, Internet Dear Linda: The Chinese have been aware of the importance of home surroundings to our well-being for centuries. Feng shui (pronounced fung sch-way) is the "art of placement." This ancient Chinese philosophy, now very much in vogue, guides the homeowner through proscribed rituals to achieve "peace and harmony" in the home. A lot of its premises are based on ancient folk wisdoms that are brought to bear upon modern concerns. Many of its concepts can be helpful. However, some of its dictums seem groundless, in my opinion....
