Last week, Microsoft announced that Windows Vista went gold, and was released to manufacturing. The release has been long coming (five years of work) and was surrounded by controversies, rumours of rewrites, and legal threats by Microsoft's competitors. We got our hands on the RTM build (Microsoft Windows 6.0 (Build 6000)), so read on for the first superficial look at Windows Vista Ultimate. [ Digg this story ] [ Sceenshots of Vista's RTM ] I stress 'superficial', because this first look "review" will only take a look at the external appearance of Vista, since it is impossible to form a proper judgment about such a big release in just a few days. The machine used for this installation is a Dell Inspiron 6000 with a Pentium M 1.73Ghz, 512MB of DDR2 RAM, and an Ati Radeon x300 with 128MB of dedicated video RAM....

"It can be pretty difficult to make the key decision between Mac and Windows. But... Macs are the best choice for many users, probably you included," Paul Vaughn writes for The San Antonio Express-News. Vaughn writes, "All Macs come with a variety of software that will help you create movies and music without buying additional programs. Apple's iLife suite is a nicely integrated package that includes iMovie, iDVD and GarageBand, among others. The combination of these lets you import your digital video, edit it, add titles, music and transitions, and then burn your movie to a DVD that can be played in any home DVD player. Movies created with iMovie have been featured at international film festivals like Cannes and Sundance — it's that good. With GarageBand you can create your own electronic music, create podcasts, record live music and plenty more." "The same folks who made the computer and its operating system make all of this software, so everything works smoothly together and you get a fantastic user experience....

Q: I recently installed new windows and a new garage door for my home. What do I need to do to make sure I get my energy credits on my income tax? HARRIET THOMPSON North Hills A: David Stewart of the Internal Revenue Service said homeowners who make certain energy-saving improvements to their homes will be able to take a tax credit of up to $500 during the next two tax seasons. "You can claim $200 this year and $300 next year," said Mr. Stewart, "or you can claim all $500 on this year's tax return. There is a $500 energy credit maximum over the next two years." By tax time, there will be a new form available: Form 5695, Residential Energy Credits. The good news is that this is a tax credit, not a deduction. That means you subtract the amount from the tax you owe....
