As a state senator, he authored the bill that led to the construction of the state Capitol. Despite his contributions to St. Paul, the name William Blake Dean has lost much of its prominence in the 85 years since his death. But at least Dean's once-derelict home at 353 Summit Ave. appears to have regained its stateliness. The restoration of the Queen Anne mansion drew dozens of his descendants ? some coming from as far away as Colorado and South Carolina ? to see the house in its original grandeur at a potluck family reunion Sunday. Leila Poullada, of St. Paul, Dean's great-granddaughter, said her family is grateful for the transformation, which was completed last year.... | |

| | | Safety tips for using your woodstove or fireplace | | Posted Wednesday, November 15, 2006 11:01:25 AM by Blog57 Team | | Chimney sweeps in the area share a few safety tips for using your wood stove or fireplace this winter. Chimney sweeps in the area suggest you get your chimney cleaned at least once a year, right now is a great time to do so. Try to burn hardwoods like maple or oak. Never burn trash or any wood that has been treated, varnished, painted, or stained; that could lead to build ups in your chimney, and its bad for the environment. Make sure your fireplace tools are in good shape, and make sure the area surrounding your fireplace is clear of any hazards such as drapes or wall hangings. One sweep did say store bought starters and newspapers are ok, but, he did warn that you should avoid the glossy or colored sections of your newspaper, they could cause chimney fires. .... | |

| | | Recycle newspapers in fireplace | | Posted Sunday, November 12, 2006 11:00:45 AM by Blog57 Team | | DEAR READERS: If you have a fireplace, grab a stack of old newspapers and get rolling. Newspapers make excellent fireplace logs, and they are really easy to put together. Here's how you can make your own logs for burning: 1. You'll need a bundle of old newspapers and a few empty vegetable cans. 2. Remove both ends and the labels from the cans, and discard any glossy inserts in the newspaper. 3. Take a 1-inch stack of newspaper and, section by section, alternate the direction of the folds. Tightly roll up the stack, slip a can on one end and slide it to the middle of the rolled newspaper to hold it together. 4. Completely soak the rolled newspaper in water, then (this is very important) let it dry completely to compress the papers and hold them together while they burn.... | |

| | | Inspect chimney before using fireplace | | Posted Tuesday, October 31, 2006 7:04:02 AM by Blog57 Team | | Q. I plan to use my fireplace often this winter to lower my heating bills, but I have never been very good at getting a fire started and keeping it going. Is there a proper method to build a fire? A.If you ask 100 old-timers about the best method to build a fire, you probably will get 100 different answers. There actually are many effective and efficient ways to lay a fire and get it started, but most have basic fire-building concepts in common. First, if you plan to use your fireplace often, have the chimney inspected by a certified chimney sweep. Many houses burn to the ground each year from faulty or dirty chimneys. This is particularly true if you have had problems getting hot fires going in the past. A smoldering fire creates much flammable creosote which builds up inside the chimney.... | |
