| | | Made, but not logged, in China | | Posted Sunday, December 24, 2006 2:59:40 PM by Blog57 Team | | Night and day, the timber ships reach this Yangtze River port, one of the world's busiest clearinghouses for logs from every corner of the globe: Southeast Asia, the Amazon, Russia, the Congo. Soon, this wood will be yours. It will be your hardwood floor and your coffee table, your bedroom dresser and your plywood -- all stamped with the most successful label of our time: Made in China. In less than a decade, China has transformed the global timber trade, importing more wood each year than any country in history and quadrupling the amount of wood products it ships around the globe. And no one is consuming more of it than Americans. U.S. shoppers have become the world's best customers of low-cost Chinese flooring, furniture and plywood, buying 10 times as much as a decade ago.... | |

| | | Clean concrete before applying vinyl flooring | | Posted Sunday, November 12, 2006 2:57:43 PM by Blog57 Team | | Q. I was wondering if I could lay vinyl flooring on a concrete floor. Or do I need an underlayment before I lay down the squares? A. Concrete floors can be prepared to receive an adhesive rather than installing an expensive underlayment. Generally speaking, concrete floors have damp chalky surfaces that are not friendly to the adhesives used to install vinyl floor coverings. Concrete also has a high pH factor that is not suitable for most adhesives. Some of the experts I talked with say the surface of the concrete needs to be cleaned and sealed before applying an adhesive. Others say a good cleaning alone will do the trick. In my case I knew that there was a vapor barrier under the concrete floor to prevent moisture migration through the concrete.... | |

| | | Style your home: New design ideas in flooring are affordable, easy ... | | Posted Friday, November 10, 2006 1:09:47 PM by Blog57 Team | | For those of you who have well-worn wall-to-wall carpet and are dreading the high cost of replacement, here are some current thoughts on flooring alternatives: In the last five years the cost of carpeting has increased dramatically due to the rise in oil prices - nylon being a petroleum by-product. This now brings the cost of stone, bamboo, hardwood and marmolium into financial reach because it almost parallels the cost of carpet. The trend in hard surface flooring has also been on the rise because of the easy care and stain resistant finishes. Due to the recent demand, manufacturers have developed exciting new designs and size options in hard surface flooring. The most popular of these options are the engineered wood planks. These planks have a thick laminated backing with a veneer of signature wood on the front.... | |

| | | Fielden Responds To Mason Claims | | Posted Thursday, November 09, 2006 11:10:40 AM by Blog57 Team | | Great Britain prop Stuart Fielden has disputed Willie Mason's version of the events that earned the Australian a one-match ban last week. Kangaroos forward Mason was suspended after flooring Fielden with a punch in the early stages of Saturday's Gillette Tri-Nations clash in Sydney, which Britain won in memorable fashion. The punishment handed to the player has been condemned in some quarters as lenient and Fielden does not accept Mason's explanation that he was acting in self-defence. At a disciplinary hearing this week, Mason's lawyer claimed his client was responding to verbal and physical threats from Fielden. But Fielden, quoted in Australia's Daily Telegraph, said: "There have been a whole lot of untruths spoken about what happened and how much was said leading up to the incident.... | |

| | | Cops looking for Kusni | | Posted Monday, November 06, 2006 7:14:43 AM by Blog57 Team | | THE police are looking for Senegals Honorary Consul to Singapore, Benny Kusni, after the consulate was raided on Friday night. But the Indonesian businessman is nowhere to be found. He has apparently not returned home since the raid and it is not clear if he is even in Singapore. The African nations consulate office, located on the fifth floor of Laus Arcadia building in East Coast Road, was doubling up as an illegal casino. The police arrested 31 people, among them Singaporeans, Malaysians and Indonesians. Foreign Minister George Yeo told reporters on Saturday that the incident should not affect ties between the two countries. Singapore and Senegal established diplomatic ties in September 1999. Kusni, who is believed to be in his 30s, came with his family to study in Singapore as a child.... | |

| | | Flooring firm in line for a night on the tiles | | Posted Friday, November 03, 2006 11:24:53 AM by Blog57 Team | | A FLOORING firm which is bucking the UK's manufacturing job-loss trend, and a fast-growing valve maker supplying global oil and gas markets, are among nine Valleys firms in the running for business awards later this month. The 400-worker Abingdon Flooring of Newbridge, which plans to recruit more staff while other manufacturers are laying people off, has been shortlisted for a Caerphilly Business Achiever Award. The firm supplies carpets to UK retailers. They are joined among the finalists by Hobbs Valves of Caerphilly, which aims to double in size within a year as it makes inroads into the international energy sector. John Edney of Caerphilly Business Forum, which organises the awards in association with Hugh James Solicitors and Broomfield & Alexander, said, "These firms are typical of the exceptionally high standard of entries this year." Last year Abingdon reported an increase in turnover of 32% to £52m and profits of over £2m.... | |

| | | Bernard Fernandez | Berbick's star-crossed life | | Posted Tuesday, October 31, 2006 11:16:14 AM by Blog57 Team | | ANYONE FAMILIAR with the travails of Trevor Berbick probably suspected the former WBC heavyweight titlist's life would not end happily. Berbick, whose age most commonly has been reported as 52, was found dead over the weekend in a church courtyard in Portland, Jamaica. Police said he died of a head wound, inflicted from behind by an assailant. A metal pipe was found at the scene. A 20-year-old man and his mother, both said to be involved in a land dispute with Berbick, are being questioned, with the son considered a suspect in the slaying. Their names have not been released. Earlier this year, Berbick was charged with assault for allegedly punching the woman, police said. Most will remember Berbick (50-11-1, 33 KOs) as a good, not great, fighter whose place in boxing history likely is assured not so much because of his brief title reign in 1986, but because he was a party to more memorable events than anyone this side of Forrest Gump.... | |

| | | Couple are ready for final act in floor show | | Posted Saturday, October 28, 2006 7:05:11 AM by Blog57 Team | | Dear Greg: My husband and I purchased a town home in Baldwin Park from Issa Homes in February for more than $500,000. During construction my husband checked on the home twice daily and identified a number of unsatisfactory issues. Issa has addressed most of the cosmetic items. The issue it will not address is the most significant -- warped flooring on the second floor that was exposed to rain for two months. The floor in my son's room exceeds the allowed deviation listed in the Issa warranty. Workers measured this in front of my husband and even took pictures. It's tragic how Issa is ignoring this. If we sell the house, we will have to disclose that the flooring is warped and sell at a lower price. We want an independent appraisal to measure the loss in market value and for Issa to compensate us for this amount.... | |

| | | Remember, a dream remodeling job doesn't come cheap | | Posted Thursday, October 26, 2006 1:00:44 PM by Blog57 Team | | We recently came across a newspaper advertisement inviting readers to take advantage of an "unbelievable" kitchen remodeling "package" for just under $10,000. The display showed a photo of a lovely kitchen, and even offered to throw in a free sink with presentation of the ad. Upon closer examination, we noticed a small asterisk next to the price that referenced some very fine print at the bottom of the ad. It said the special "base package" included: removal and disposal of existing cabinets and countertops; installation of up to 12 cabinets; two 8-foot slab granite countertops with a bullnose edge and 4-inch backsplash (choice of three colors); cutouts in the slab for a sink and faucet; and installation of a sink and faucet. Sounds pretty good, right? Wrong! What stood out to us as veteran remodelers and consumer advocates were all the missing details.... | |
