Woman's prayer for heat answered

EAST MOLINE, Illinois -- Just one day after seeing the story of 65-year-old Judy Cullett, workers at Family Heating and Cooling in Davenport knew they had to help. "I thought, 'We'd better get [there] soon and rip [the old furnace] out as soon as we can,'" said Todd Ruckoldt of Family Heating. Wednesday night, Newschannel 8 aired the story about how Cullett's furnace would no longer work, and the senior citizen's fixed-budget wouldn't allow her to purchase a new one. Local charities were unable to foot the bill, as well, leaving Cullett with no place to turn. Cullett had only a space-heater and a stove as sources of heat. To try to stay warm, she would force herself to fall asleep in a chair nearby. Her granddaughter, Francheska Clover, then contacted Newschannel 8's Call for Action volunteers, asking if they had any contacts....

DES MOINES, Iowa State workers who are responsible for maintaining the heating, cooling and electrical systems at the Capitol complex were paid about 100-thousand-dollars more in overtime than was allotted in their department's overtime budget. That's according to a copyright story in The Des Moines Register. The Register also reports that at least one of the state workers nearly doubled his salary with overtime pay. Bob Straker, a district vice president with Iowa's chapter of AFSCME, was paid approximately 95-thousand-dollars during the 2006 budget year, according to state payroll records. About 40 percent of that came from overtime pay. His base pay was about 48-thousand-dollars. Division-wide, state payroll records show that the operations division, which Straker worked in, exceeded its 70-thousand-dollar budget for overtime last year by nearly 100-thousand-dollars....

Heating bills can be lower in warmer winter

The National Weather Service is predicting temperatures slightly above normal in the coming three months. That is cold comfort, however, considering the average temperature during December, January and February is 30.2 degrees. There is a weak El Nino effect, or warming, in the Pacific Ocean, which will raise the temperature about 1 degree during those months, National Weather Service meteorologist Rodney Smith said. The service is forecasting a total snowfall of 27.7 inches during the quarter. Not to worry. There are things home-owners can do to keep their houses warm and energy efficient and save on utility bills. Topping the list is getting the furnace serviced. Also important: seal cracks around doors and windows and get used to a lower setting of the thermostat. Those suggestions and others come from Action Housing Inc., which runs a weatherization program....

21st Century Foods of San Antonio, Texas, a manufacturer of fresh, fully-cooked and ready-to-eat entrees for retail and institutional markets, is one food processor that is in a whirlwind of production activity. The company, which started operation in 2004 with a patented process for re-constituting and re-texturing de-boned chicken meat, and gross product shipped for that first year approximating .75 million pounds, is now providing its entrees to such mega-retailers as Albertsons and Target, with a projected 7.0 million pounds of product to be shipped in 2006. Not bad a start for a company that is new to the fresh-food, ready-to-eat entre market. But, how does this start-up manage to maintain such a rigorous production output with a fresh product line-up? One crucial factor is the completely state-of-the-art cooking and cooling processes that they are using, and particularly their pouch cooling set-up, all of which was designed and built by food processing equipment developer, Lyco Manufacturing....
