DEAR TIM: Do you think under-cabinet lighting is a smart thing to do in a kitchen? Is it hard to incorporate cabinet lighting into cabinets? Is installing it something a homeowner can do safely? I'm afraid that modern under-cabinet lighting will make my kitchen not match the rest of my home. What would you do? -Linda H., Belleville, Ont., Canada DEAR LINDA: Not only is it a good idea to install under-cabinet lighting in a kitchen, it makes sense in a wet bar area, a bathroom, a study or any other location where wall cabinets overhang a counter surface. Wall cabinets create a dark shadow area in kitchens and other places where ceiling lights are placed close to the face of the wall cabinets. Under-cabinet lights eliminate these shadows and create abundant light to help you see what you are working on in the kitchen....

Landscape lighting

Gardens that are pretty in sunshine can look lovely at nighttime, too, with the addition of landscape lighting. "I work all day and sometimes at night," said Elizabeth Flower of Manatee County, who conducts fine arts and antique auctions. "When I get home late and look out on my gardens, they are beautiful." Security is the primary reason for landscape lighting, but homeowners find that they enjoy the aesthetics of illumination as much as the safeguards. "I live on a dark street, very dark, too dark," said Richard Christian of Siesta Key. "Security was my main emphasis, but just the way the lights illuminate things is really attractive." Jim Paulin, president of Nightlites Landscape Lighting, designed the landscape lighting for the Christian and Flower properties....

When Laura Arrigoni updated the kitchen in her home, she wanted the lighting to be functional and add architectural dimension. Now her kitchen features three softly glowing orange pendant lamps that separate the kitchen and family area. And she has plenty of focused light for the stove and counter now that the recessed lighting is gone. "It just adds so much more interest," the Seattle resident said. "At night, it adds this really pretty ambiance to the room." With fall upon us and the days growing shorter, now is a good time to reassess your own lighting situation. If you're going through a renovation, Kim Hansen, owner of Harold's Lighting in Seattle, recommends using a lighting consultant (most lighting specialty stores have one) to assess the situation....

We put them in every fixture in our home and they work great. In terms of a lighting strategy for your whole house, which will include the types of fixtures as well as the types of bulbs, a few guidelines can help you do it right. The most important principle is simply that more light does not mean better light. It is important that you match the amount of light you need and the quality of that light with the function that is performed there. Take advantage of natural lighting as much as possible....
