Officials eye funding for Bellefonte pool

BELLEFONTE -- Bellefonte's outdoor swimming pool has been losing thousands of dollars every year, and local leaders are looking for both immediate and long-term solutions to the problem. The borough owns the Bob Kepler Memorial Pool, located in Governors Park, and takes care of much of the maintenance. The Bellefonte YMCA manages it and provides staffing. Together, the borough and the Y are spending in the neighborhood of $20,000 a year more to operate it than they are bringing in. Because of that, the borough and YMCA are trying to tap into grants and other funding sources. Sue Hannegan, assistant borough manager, said an application for $20,000 in grant money was submitted to the state in December. That money would be used to run and maintain the pool this summer....

Saskatchewan Wheat Pool cut its first-quarter loss to $5.1 million from $7.7 million in the same period a year ago, aided by bigger volumes of grain, the company said Thursday. "The first quarter's performance certainly signals optimism for this year," Pool chief executive Mayo Schmidt said in a conference call with analysts and reporters. The Pool shipped 19 per cent more grains and oilseeds in the fiscal quarter, ended Oct. 31, than in the first quarter of fiscal 2006, Schmidt said. Hot, dry weather led to an early finish to harvest, with most of the spring wheat crop in Saskatchewan making the top two grades, Schmidt said. Prairie farmers' crops are also in high demand due to drought in U.S. and Australia, major grain producing nations, he said....

Amanda Weir Taking Control in and out of the Pool
Posted Saturday, November 11, 2006 3:16:25 AM by Blog57 Team
BY MIKE WATKINS//Special Correspondent Amanda Weir's days of needing to be bribed with candy to complete her dry-land workouts are a thing of the past. Even though weight training still isn't one of her favorite things to do, she understands the pay-off in the pool. The same can be said about her struggles to break through since winning two silver relay medals at the 2004 Athens Olympics. Despite never falling out of the swimming limelight, she found it more and more difficult to find her rightful spot on the medals podium at international competitions. She also had to watch up-and-coming compatriots like Kate Ziegler, Katie Hoff and Jessica Hardy win individual world championships titles and set world records while she continued to search for her own path....

NEW DELHI: According to a study released by US-based consulting firm neoIT, India may face serious competition from cities in eastern Europe and China as outsourcing destinations. India would still have three of the top five slots, with Chennai joining Kolkata and Hyderabad in that category. The choice of outsourcing cities is based on both generic and enterprise-specific factors, the study, done by NeoIT, points out. Generic factors are independent of the country from which work is offshored, with the entrepreneur offshoring his work mainly to benefit from cheap labour. The other generic determinants are availability of proper infrastructure and lower country risk. It is these generic factors that have made Indian cities hot destinations for offshoring, it says....

TRACY - Since Merrill F. West High School opened in 1993, educators and students have waited for a stadium and a swimming pool. They still have more than a year to wait, but an architect's drawing of a $9.4 million proposed stadium and aquatics complex approved by the school board this week will give them an idea of what's in store. Plans are still in the preliminary stages, said Steve Thornton, West High's athletic director, but he likes what he sees so far. "It looks like it's going to be a first-class facility all the way," he said. ....

The county has attempted to get rid of the mosquitoes, but neighbors say the pool is greener than ever. Getting the pool cleaned hasn't been easy, because the home has changed ownership.
